With a population of over 350,000, Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island, and the third-largest in New Zealand. It is known throughout New Zealand and beyond as the Garden City, due to its many public and private green spaces. The city boasts many parks, rivers and a typically English-style layout of central square and parallel streets running north to south and east to west.

Christchurch is surrounded by mountains, the Canterbury Plains, beautiful coastline, and the Port Hills, which provide a dramatic backdrop to the city. Activities available in the wider Christchurch / Canterbury region include hot air ballooning, hiking / walking, mountain biking, wine tours, boating, surfing, golf, and much more – far too much to list here! During the winter months, several world-class ski fields can be reached within a 1-2-hour drive of the city.

Christchurch is on the road to recovery from a series of damaging earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. The recovery process is seeing a number of exciting venues mushrooming up around the city, and post-quake Christchurch has been labelled well worth a visit by Lonely Planet, and a city to watch by other major travel publications and websites. Christchurch continues as a vibrant city that offers outstanding leisure and sporting facilities, a wide range of dining options, a burgeoning reborn nightlife / bar scene, and a strong arts and entertainment culture that includes popular international events such as the World Buskers’ Festival.

You can visit New Zealand and international wildlife at the Orana and Willowbank wildlife parks, take in a show at the newly re-housed Court Theatre, explore history at Canterbury or Air Force Museums, see penguins at the International Antarctic Centre, shop ‘til you drop at Re:Start, the city’s unique upmarket shipping container shopping mall, take a leisurely punt down the Avon River, or experience spectacular 360 degree views of the city and surrounding areas from the top of the Christchurch Gondola.
